new year's

Another holiday away from the usual was New Year's. As I've written before, it gets dark here around 3/3:30 and so when I found out the fireworks would be launched at 6pm, I was not surprised. Some friends and I stayed after work to await the crash and flash of the lights. We drank sparkling cider and ate candy until the moment arrived. I had ordered some more clothes that week and tried them on while we waited. At 6 we heard the first boom and 15 minutes later we were out on the sidewalk watching the fireworks lit from the dock. The booms became too much for little pug Bianka and she and her companion soon went inside. It was a cold night, in the low teens, so Liz and I didn't last much longer either. On the inside of the building, I rested my head against the cool glass as it reverberated from the crashes.

We headed to the next event of the evening--movie watching. We watched The Mother Project, a story about a photographer who took images of her mother with schizophrenia as a way of dealing with her life. Interesting how she did the same thing to her children as her mother did to her.

I walked home after the movie, glad for the cold air and the exercise. Ryan and I talked on the phone until I made it home and then video chatted until midnight.

It was low-key and I liked that. Time with friends, relaxing.

This was the first NYE without babysitting.
