light at night

When the weather isn't busy raining, being overcast, or foggy, we have some excellently clear days here. One of the best parts of that is the magnificent sunsets over the water. Here is a subdued sunset after climbing down Mt. Dewey one evening.

The other nice part is being able to see very far out over the water.

potlucks

One of the things I enjoy each week is a vegan potluck at my place. Each time is a little something different. This week, Jessica graced us with her rice ball accompanied with marinated mushrooms and red peppers. We were all very impressed...and only slightly disappointed when we realized the rice was rice and not ice cream. Also among our food this week were biscuits, spinach and daiya cheese rolls, quinoa with baked tempeh and sweet chili sauce and salad sushi rolls. It was a boon of a week!

the winter blahs

The winter blahs make you not want to do much. Even on days where this is sun (despite the frigid temps), motivation is down and not much gets done. I do my dishes about once per week, laundry every month or so and force myself to go grocery shopping on the weekends. When you hang out with people, even your closest friends, you look forward to time where you are by yourself. I am told that many people in Alaska feel this way during winter, so it's not too out of the ordinary. Depressive symptoms are the norm? As long as we keep functioning, I suppose.

I am about ready for spring, but unfortunately have some time to wait before then. I am going to try to make a better effort at posting on this journal and keep you all updated on life here. For the last couple of weeks I have been making the rounds of dog-sitting. It's nice to have some companions once in a while. Animals seem to know when you need company, too. Currently, I am watching the Cookie while Brooke is in POW (Prince of Whales Island). She is curled up next to me on the couch while I work on a few things before bed. The past few days have been cold, yet clear and we have had some incredible sunsets. One of these days I will actually take my camera to work to capture said sunsets. The sun is still setting on my way home from work. It is nice to no longer have the pitch black to face once I am done with work.
